Unlocking Tea's Full Flavor: The Necessity of Filtered Water and Volvic!
Sometimes my French friends and family tell me: “oh…I don’t drink tea. I drink coffee. because tea is just hot water with colors.”
Whenever I hear this from people, I want to scream out loud!!!
But why is my tea always so flavorful and perfumed, while their teas are just tasteless ?
The key here is the choice of water.
Besides the fact that the quality of the tea might affect the experience of tea, water is a crucial factor. When I started living in france and making my tea everyday, I ALWAYS filter my tap water with Brita! This is not an advertisement for anyone, but let me show you why:
The chlorine added to your tap water is to eliminate any unpleasant smells that might occur to your drinking water due to old pipes and transportation. Well this chlorine will also think of the aromas of your tea as something to be removed. The result is that you will have a cup of tea without any distinguishable tastes because the chlorine has removed all the good taste!
Calcium inside our tap water are also going to remove the characteristics of your tea ! Calcium and other minerals is going to affect the color and more importantly the texture of your tea. When the level of calcium or other minerals are too high, you will have a tea that tastes flat with a grey layer of tannin floating on the surface of your tea. This seems quite unpleasant, right?
For all the people who have mistaken that teas are just water with colors, please give it another try! Please remember to use a Brita water filter or Volvic bottle water when preparing your next tea… or coffee. I guarantee you that it will taste completely different!
